Search Engine
Factors |
-
Keyword Density (KD) - at its most
basic level, KD refers to the percentage of total words
on the page that are keywords. In actuality, KD is a
lot more complicated than this, because each area of
each of your pages has its own keyword density. To make
matters even more confusing, the different search engines
each have different optimal keyword densities. So, for
example, to be properly optimized, you might need a
3% KD on Google and a 2% KD on Alta Vista.
- Keyword Prominence (KP) - this is a measure
of the placement of keywords on your pages. So it's
important to not only have the correct number of keywords,
but to ensure that they're in the correct positions
througout your pages. As with KD, each search engines
has a different optimal KP.
- Link Popularity (LP) - LP is a measure
of the quantity and quality of incoming links to your
site. Like the other metrics, there's more to LP than
meets the eye. It's not enough to go out and convince
thousands of other sites to link to your site. Having
lots of links helps, but if they're not the right kind
of links, the effect will be minimal.
- Internal Linking Structure (ILS) - your
website's ILS can have a major impact on your search
engine rankings. If your ILS isn't properly optimized,
the effect of your optimization efforts in other areas
will be greatly diminished.
- Link Text (LT) - LT is related to both
LP and ILS. It's important to not only have enough of
the right kind of links, but also to have the correct
text embedded in the links.
In addition to these primary factors, there are a whole
host of secondary factors that can influence your rankings,
or even prevent your site from becoming listed at all.
If you think this all sounds a bit daunting, you're not
alone. Many people underestimate the amount of work involved
in this process. Yes, you can buy a search engine optimization
and submission software and accomplish much of this on
your own. Keep in mind, however, that a submission tool
is not an automated solution to becoming ranked in the
search engines. In fact, despite the outrageous (and patently
false) claims made by some software vendors, there's really
no such thing as a software program that can automatically
elevate your site to the top positions.
There are some good search engine optimization tools
available, but you should be prepared to spend a significant
amount of time learning how to use it properly. Even then,
the results achieved by the typical user usually won't
compare with the results achieved by a professional who
specializes in this field. If you'd prefer to focus on
running your business instead of worrying about your search
engine rankings, then hiring an SEO firm may be your best
option.
